James P. Russell
Senior Director of Philanthropy

James Russell brings three decades of experience leading and managing cultural non-profits in Massachusetts and Rhode Island to his new role as Senior Director of Philanthropy. Previously, James served as the Gosnell Executive Director at the Nantucket Historical Association. Under his tenure, the association invested significantly in its portfolio of historic properties, boosted scholarship and opened its doors to be more responsive to and inclusive of the year-round community. Prior, he was President of the New Bedford Whaling Museum for a decade. That institution witnessed dramatic growth including a committed outreach to underserved populations in the community. Mission-focused program expansion and a commensurate increase in philanthropy led to a major capital campaign to build a new educational center. His passion for working within charitable organizations includes work at the IYRS School for Technology and Trade and the Herreshoff Marine Museum and commenced 30 years ago when he was invited to direct the Attleboro Art Museum. Recently, James consulted at Bristol Community College and witnessed the impact of philanthropy in Fall River to empower students through providing affordable educational opportunities.

James grew up in Ireland where he attended Belvedere College, a Jesuit school in Dublin. He, and his wife Delia, are graduates of Harvard University. They live in Attleboro and have two adult children. James is a member of the Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus Parish.
